Title:
Arsenic Lurks in Canadian Playgrounds: Is Your Child Safe?
Publication Date:
January 2003
Abstract:
Playground structures made from a type of pressure-treated wood are leaching high levels of arsenic into the surrounding sand, potentially exposing young children to the carcinogenic heavy metal. Wood that is pressure-treated with Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA), a common preservative, is the familiar greenish-tinted wood often found in playgrounds, decks, fences and other constructions. Its tendency to leach arsenic and other chemicals into the environment, and the resulting potential to affect human health, have been recognized since the early 1980’s.
