Swimming is a healthy physical activity suitable for both adults and children. For children especially, learning to swim is an important safety skill as well.

That being said, there are some concerns about exposing very young children to the high levels of chlorine typically found in swimming pools.

Avoid exposing babies under six months of age to chlorinated pools. Up until six months old, babies’ skin is very permeable, meaning it is easy for chemicals to pass through their skin and into their bloodstream and organs.

Additionally, there is some evidence to suggest that chlorine can trigger attacks in children with asthma, or possibly increase the risk of developing asthma in otherwise healthy children.

Regardless of age, swimmers should wash thoroughly with soap and water to remove any traces of chlorine remaining on the skin after they get out of the pool.
